Brazilian database, and others

Country Databases

Different sources, especially IBGE, BCdoB, SUSEP and Ipea (data prepared in cooperation with Bernardo Weaver of the World Bank)

The country data is initially established for Brazil, i.e., Brazilian database and is available upon request, along with others similar Country Databases.

Brazil is a Federal Country and data are collected for each of the 27 states for the period 1995 to 2008. Among the sources of the Brazilian database are IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística), Banco Central do Brazil, Superintendencia de Seguros Privados (SUSEP), Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (Ipea).
The data available include data on Insurance and Entrepreneurship, i.e., similar to the variables for the Global database.

Variables available for the database:

  • Measures of Insurance
Data from Superintendencia de Seguros Privados (SUSEP), the Insurance Regulator in Reais (R$) at nominal value. Data: 1995-2011.

    • Total State Insurance Premium.
    • Premium All: 1995-2011
    • Premium Life: 2003-2011
    • Premium NonLife: 2003-2011
    • Penetration Ratio (premium divided by GDP) can be regarded as measure of availability of insurance.
    • Adult Literacy Rate, Years of Schooling, Analphabetism Rate, Average years of education for adults (25 years of age or older) can be regarded as measures of risk aversion and thus propensity to insurance.
    • Insurance density (premium over population) can be regarded as a measure of knowledge of insurance.
    • Number of people with private health insurance coverage on each state of Brazil.
    • Health Insurance premium on each state of Brazil.
    • Expenditure for Social Security per capita.
    • Contributions to Social Security.

  • Measures of Entrepreneurship
Data from IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) in Reais (R$), current value. Data: 1995-2011

    • Total Number of units.
    • Total number of Startups. Startups are legal entities registered each year on State Trade Registries,
    • Total number of Startups LLCs. Startups LLCs registered each year on State Trade Registries.

    • Total Factor Productivity (TPF).

  • Measures of entrepreneurship by type of enterprise:

    • Number of companies in financial sector
    • Number of companies 0 to 4 employees
    • Number of companies 5 to 9 employees
    • Number of companies 10 to 29 employees
    • Number of companies 30 to 49 employees
    • Number of companies 50 to 99 employees
    • Number of companies 100 to 499 employees
    • Number of companies more than 500 employees.

  • Control Variables
    on each state of Brazil
Data from IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) and Central Bank (Banco Central do Brasil) in Reais (R$) current value. Data: 1995-2011

    • Financial Intermediation, Financial System Operations,
    • Health and Education,
    • Institutional setting. At the level of each Brazilian state it is difficult to find appropriate measures of the institutional settings. The most important control variable is the institutional setting. At the level of each Brazilian state it is difficult to find appropriate measures of the institutional settings. Proxies for the institutional sitting at the state local could be the people who die for homicide and violence, or the percentage of people who die for infant mortality, or the jobs undertaken by children under age can. The intuition is that the decline of these measures implies an improvement of the institutional setting, i.e., an improved legal and social environment leads to a decline of homicides (MortHomicpermilhab), deaths of infants (Taxamortinfpermil), and work of children (Taxtrabinf)

  • Other Variables
Data from IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) and Central Bank (Banco Central do Brasil) in Reais (R$) current value. Data: 1995-2011

    • GDP, GDP per capita,
    • Unemployment index, Unemployed Population, Employed Population,
